Migration guide

Move your league off spreadsheets

Excel has run more hockey leagues than any platform ever built. Here's how to retire yours without losing what made it work.

Spreadsheet leagues are actually the easiest migration — your data is already in the exact form the AI setup assistant loves. Paste your roster tab and schedule tab, describe your divisions, and the assistant builds the whole league. What you gain over the sheet: standings that update themselves during games, public pages every player can check, personal stats and goalie numbers, and a free app — so nobody messages you "what's the standings?" on Sunday night again.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Round up your sheets

The roster tab, the schedule tab, and your standings formulas. If it's several files and formats, that's fine — the assistant reads plain pasted text.

  2. 2

    Create your league

Sign up and claim your public URL. A single league up to 10 teams fits Starter at $20/month ($14/month annual); bigger operations take League Management.

  3. 3

Paste it into the AI assistant

Copy your rosters and schedule straight from the spreadsheet into the setup assistant, and describe divisions in a sentence. It creates teams, players, divisions, and games — or generates a fresh round-robin schedule from your game nights.

  4. 4

    Check the details

Skim the generated teams and schedule against your sheet: names, timeslots, divisions. Fix anything odd in the dashboard directly.

  5. 5

    Send captains a join code

Each team joins the free Hockey Line app with a code. Every player now has the schedule, standings, and their own stats — no more screenshotting the sheet to the group chat.

  6. 6

    Score games live

Track goals, assists, penalties, and shots as they happen. Your standings formulas retire: everything computes and publishes automatically to your public pages.

Typical time for the full migration: one afternoon.

Frequently asked questions

What format does my spreadsheet need to be in?

Any format you can copy-paste. The AI setup assistant reads plain text — roster lists, schedule grids, even messy multi-tab exports. You paste, it builds leagues, divisions, teams, players, and games.

Can it recreate my schedule exactly, or does it make a new one?

Either. Paste your existing schedule to keep it, or give the assistant your game nights and timeslots and it generates a balanced round-robin schedule from scratch.

What does this cost compared to my free spreadsheet?

Starter is $20/month ($14/month billed annually — $168/yr) for one league up to 10 teams. Split across an 8-team league, that's about $21 per team per year — usually less than one league's worth of Sunday-night admin time.

Can I keep my historical seasons from the spreadsheet?

Keep the sheet as your archive — there's no bulk import of past seasons. From your first live-scored game onward, Hockey Line Leagues builds the history automatically, season over season.
